2014 UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup: Castiglione congratulates its hero
Second day of the competition in Castiglione Della Pescaia, and the second win for local star Alessandro Zanardi. After the time trial yesterday, the road races today took place on a very fast flat circuit (8.1 km), through the town centre. Athletes competed over different distances, depending on their category.
“We had no doubt about the success of the even,t” said Renato Di Rocco, president of the Italian Cycling Federation and member of the UCI Management Committee. “We have worked in full cooperation with the municipal administration and everything looks perfect to me. I am also amazed by the popular attraction of the even.t”
As an Honorary Citizen, Zanardi made Castiglione proud of “its” hero with a second win in two days (2:07:28). Paving the way from the start, the former Formula One pilot finally took the lead in the last 500 metres, engaging a sprint that did not leave any hope for his opponents. “It was a great but tough race, so winning like this, at 47, means a lot to me. My fellow escapees were of a very high level and I knew that the sprint would be tricky. This is why I decided to attack at the very last minute in order to avoid any bad surprises”, said Zanardi who celebrated for long minutes with his numerous fans.
